Below is information from the Mothersafe service based at the Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney (NSW).

          Travel in Pregnancy

NB. Being in Darwin, many of our patients ask about the safety of travel to Bali (Indonesia) during pregnancy. Health risks in Indonesia are not the same as in Australia (which also carries its own risks). We advise that you check appropriate current information about the travel health and other risks for wherever you wish to travel, for example:

         smartraveller.gov.au website about Indonesia

          thetraveldoctor.com.au

You should also discuss your travel plans with your GP.

In the end, the decision to travel overseas (or within Australia) or not when you are pregnant is a personal decision which clearly carries some risks; you should learn as much as you can about these risks and do all you can to minimise them – and in some circumstances, that may mean not travelling overseas at all during pregnancy.

Also make sure that you are aware of the rules for travelling while pregnant that the airline you plan to fly with uses. These rules seem to change quite often and are different between different airlines, so you need to check your specific plans with your own airline.

If your airline requires you to have a letter from your Doctor stating that you are “safe to travel” (as is usually the case in late pregnancy) then be aware that if your Doctor does not judge that you are “safe to travel”, then the Doctor will not be able to write such a letter and you may not be able to travel. Further, being judged “safe to travel” does NOT mean that there is no risk in travel – unexpected pregnancy complications can occur at any time without warning.
